06 BANDS OF AKL - CHARLIE FREAK

I was happy to spend some time with the guys from the band Charlie Freak for my on- going series "Bands of Auckland". As some of you may be aware I have taken a small break from these interviews but I am working an a few current posts and there are many more to come so keep an eye out! Im Happy to kick 2016 bands of auckland series off with the band Charlie Freak. In the past few months they have released a new Album, Opened up for Mac Demarco, released a music video for their first single 'Tears enough', and played some great gigs with numerous different bands. Charlie Freak have grown a great crowd to follow their great talent and their catchy upbeat tunes which are defiantly not shying people away!

How did you Band name come about?

we came up with the band name  because of a few reasons -

1. we were doing the EP and we didn’t have a name for our band

2. the old bass player and I ( Leith ) are big Stealy dan fans and one of his tracks is called Charlie freak. Our Album at one point was actually the leading search on iTunes and google when you typed in " charlie Freak" which was cool.

3. The name also felt relevant because of a lot of small fun cool little things which happened around the time of coming up with a band name ( A family member called their cat called charlie and small other coincidence etc.. )

In addition to that question how did you come up with your album name "made in Nippon"?

We actually named our album after the small shop we rehearse on top of which is called "made in Nippon" which means made in Japan ( Nippon meaning Japan in Japanese ).

2. How would you categories your music so far?

Dancy poppy tunes with jazzy chords

3. What are some of your creative process?

Me ( Leith ) and Skud sat and wrote lyric ideas and riffs and then got together to mix it all into something, we start with ideas then Jam it together then mix it all to create something.

4. How long did you take you to create your latest album?

2 months writing the song

2 months rehearsing with everyone

3-4 weeks recording

so a little while but its all put together now which is rewarding because we did a lot ourselves in our own spaces and we learnt a lot about the recording processes. We even had to re-do all the vocals for the album the night before mastering because they got erased which was a nightmare.

5. Whats your advice for anyone who wants to start a band?

Practise heaps!,  jam with lots of different people, listen to different types of music and put the time in!

Also get a Facebook page they are super helpful!! And also write some good music.

6. How long have you guys been playing together?

Callum and I started in 2013 and then Skud joined 8 months later then Ethan joined 8 months later. It took a long period of time to bring us all together and a lot of doing nothing but it was worth all the waiting and developing.
