BANDS OF AUCKLAND 03 - YUKON ERA

An Interview with Yukon Era

I was privileged  to sit down and talk to the guys from Yukon Era ! All Collage students following their love for music and sharing it with Auckland ! They produce very good quality music that radiates their youth and uniqueness !

Q&A

Who are your Biggest Influences ?

C :

Ty Segall , Tame Impala , Trust Punks , George Michael , My Dad & Kim Dotcom

B:

Kevin Parker , Matt Pogson , Zach De La Roche

L:

John Dwyer , Andrew Wilson , John Dimick , Symon’s Beard

P:

Personally, I am right now into a lot hip hop music. I've been listening to a lot Tyler the creator and Kendrick Lamar after their respective albums "to pimp a butterfly" and "cherry bomb" came out. Also some underground projects like l'orange which I just recently heard about.  Although I don't write any hip hop music myself, I think musically they're really interesting. That's just right now though. Of all time: MJ of course, because he's a performer like no other.

J:

Some of my biggest influences are John Lennon, John Clese (i promise they wont all be called john) Dave Grohl obviously, George Harrison, the list goes on...

How does Music effect you on a daily bases and in life in general ?

C :

Music is a big part of my life , daily i just play my guitar and keyboard

B:

Only to the level that I love listening to music. Ive literally been playing instruments for less than a year but thats becoming a larger part of my daily life ( due to this band ).

L:

Yes if I didn’t domestic i would do nothing !

P:

It puts me in a good mood, or whatever mood I want it to put me in. My favourite time of day is music.

J:

Music is easily the biggest part of my life and i honestly have no idea what i would do without it. I pretty much spend my whole day listening/playing/writing music.

How did you get into music and performing ?

C :

My Nan forced me into singing one time and this is what i do now

B :

I was in the choir in year 5 and 6

L :

My dad and Metallica

P :

I've always been into performance, and when I was about 12 my brother insisted I play bass guitar, and from there I have played in several bands.

J :

My parents are musical, so i guess it's in the genes. but i have always been in love with music and sound. and as soon as i had the opportunity to share my music with others i did.

How do you feel about the generalised music scene today ?

C :

Loads of my fav artists/bands are playing today , so that is really cool / sexy

B : Its Great !

L :

There is a tonne of good stuff happening which is really cool to see.

P :

I think music is doing well right now, better than it was 10 years ago. I think a lot of its more interesting personally. That's just me though.

J :

I am very two sided about the music of today. I do genuinely appreciate all artists from from Slipknot - One Direction. But alot of the pop music being made these days just really isn't my thing. and there are very few songs being played on the pop radio stations that I enjoy. But it's good to hear the occasional well written tune.

Whats your advice for the other Auckland bands / musicians who want to be noticed and follow their musical passion ?

C :

Just go hard , stuff happens !

B :

Do it with your friends and don’t stand outside at gigs

L :

PRACTISE and Play to other people !

P :

Gig as much as possible!

J :

i think that you shouldn't wait to be noticed, or picked up by a label or whatever, you need to get out there and get yourself started and make the dream happen, no point waiting round for other slackers to do it for you!

Do you have any routines when you are writing or rehearsing ?

C :

I go into my Grandmas basement where we have band practise and start writing and putting ideas together

We then layer our music until it becomes something that we are pleased with.

What do you enjoy the most about being in a band and performing in Auckland ?

We enjoy the band experience because its given us many opportunities and we have grown close with each other because we spend a lot of time practising and having fun playing and making our music. We also like keeping busy and being able to meet really like minded people who value music like we do .

What style / genre do you portray in your music ?

Lo-fi / Garagey kinda vibe generally

Where would you like your musical career to grow from here ?

From here it would be a dream if this could become a career ! And also just for other people to generally enjoy the music we produce ! No.1 priority is to just enjoy ourselves and have fun !

Whats to come for you guys ?

We have a tour starting on the 20th September !!! and we will be doing an AA show at Old folks association ( 8 Gundry Street Auckland, New Zealand  )with the Moots and Host club on the 3rd of October .
